The Kendall Foundation normally makes grants only to those non-profit organizations which are classified as public charities under Section 501 (c) (3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code or are Canadian organizations deemed equivalent by the Foundation.
Within the scope of its programs, the Foundation invites requests where its support will make a significant difference. We are attracted to organizations demonstrating ingenuity and effectiveness. Strong emphasis is placed on carefully developed and compelling institutional strategies. The Foundation is often willing to accept a high level of risk in seeking opportunities to help transform organizations and their impact on climate and energy related concerns over the long term. The Foundation seeks opportunities to use grant funds to leverage additional financing – both in the public and private sectors – and seldom provides funding where its contribution would be essentially additive. Most grants are focused on the Northeast Region reflecting the Foundation’s geographical base and modest size (estimated $2.5 million annual budget).
The Foundation provides funding for general operating needs and for specific programs and initiatives. Activities funded include:
- Advocacy
- Public education
- Innovative program implementation
- Institutional development
The Foundation does not typically make grants for the following:
- Land acquisition
- Individual land trusts
- Species-specific preservation efforts
- Television and film projects
- Basic scientific research
- Endowments or capital fund campaigns
- Building construction or maintenance
- Equipment
- Debt reduction
- Conferences or conference participation unrelated to current Foundation grants
- Waste clean-ups
- Pollution prevention or monitoring initiatives
- Activities taking place outside North America
