Welcome to the Kendall Foundation’s Conservation and Climate Change Clearinghouse. We are assembling this website as a service to the growing community of individuals who are working to protect the Earth’s land and biodiversity from the increasing anthropogenic effects of climate change. As we build this site, we hope you will keep us up to date on your work, as well as forward us relevant information that should be shared with this growing community.
We intend the Clearinghouse to serve two practical purposes:
- Staying up to date: The Clearinghouse provides access to the latest updates regarding the effects of climate change on land and biodiversity, whether found in journal articles, legislative developments, media coverage, or conferences. The Clearinghouse stays on top of the ever-expanding developments in this field so that you can catch up with what’s going on.
- Finding what you need—quickly: The Clearinghouse is your window on the vast array of work that has been conducted in this arena over the past two decades. On myriad fronts, scientists and conservation practitioners have built up an extensive body of knowledge in this area; the Clearinghouse provides an accessible and organized entry point into these divers and critical efforts.
In addition to these practical functions, our hope is that the Clearinghouse will become a virtual space for the growing community of practitioners, decision-makers, scholars, and citizens who are working to understand the complex relationship between conservation and climate change.
What kind of information will the Clearinghouse cover? Climate change is a vast topic with hundreds of subcategories, and we do not intend to cover this vast subject. Rather, the Clearinghouse will focus on (1) the myriad effects of climate change on biodiversity with a subsidiary focus on the effects on water and soils, (2) the implications of these impacts for the practice of conservation. While these parameters remain open ended, our base criterion for inclusion in the Clearinghouse comes down to a positive response to the question: Will this article/report/book/film/etc. be of direct relevance to conservation practitioners in responding to the threat of climate change? As such, a recurrent theme throughout this website is that of adaptation to climate change.
Please join the community by sending your updates to the Clearinghouse!
The depth and extent of information on climate change is nothing less than overwhelming. This site intends to cover only one aspect of the overall issue—namely, the effect of climate change on biodiversity conservation, with a side focus on water and agricultural resources. We fully understand the artificiality of the distinction we are making and accordingly recognize that nearly all climate change information will in some way be relevant to biodiversity conservation. Our justification is simply that no one has yet attempted to digest this slice of the “climate change pie,” and that the attempt will be of use to practicing conservationists, land managers, and researchers.
There are countless online guides to the broad issue of climate change, a few of which are listed here:
